Preparation to install new turf at Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium’s Pettit Field got underway Jan. 5, and the project is expected to be completed by Feb. 5. Assistant superintendent Dana Berry noted that “extremely wet and cold weather” kept the project from starting in December. A significant portion of the old turf was recycled and will be used at the Gilmer High baseball batting cages, Agriculture Education Center and for other smaller projects. The field was approved to be replaced by the Gilmer County Board of Education last August for $320,000. It was paid for with 2015 educational special purpose local option sales tax funds.
