Members of Ellijay American Legion Post 82 put up more than 1,100 white crosses along the roadside in advance of Memorial Day. Each cross bears the name of a deceased veteran who was either originally from Gilmer County or lived here when they passed. They range from World War I veterans to those who served their country in more recent conflicts like the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The line of crosses starts on South Main Street, just short of the roundabout, and ends near Post 82 on Legion Road. Legion member Fred McGill said the crosses went up in record time this year thanks to having plenty of help and an escort from the Gilmer Sheriff’s Office.
