Sidewalks and roadsides in Gilmer County were lined with those paying respect to late Gilmer firefighter/EMT Eric Maddox Thursday, Aug. 10. A procession, in which the fireman’s body was brought back home to Logan’s Funeral Home following an autopsy, was led by Gilmer Fire and Rescue and assisted by several local and state public safety agencies including Georgia State Patrol, Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office and the Ellijay and East Ellijay Police Departments. Highway overpasses and intersections from Atlanta to Gilmer County were lined with firetrucks and firefighters in a salute to Maddox, who passed away from a sudden medical event last week. “The trip home was something you don’t see every day,” said Fire Chief Daniel Kauffman.
