Other building projects are in progress
Soon, Gilmer County will have a new Performing Arts Center as a community hub.
“We’re looking at it as a true community asset,” Gilmer County Schools (GCS) Superintendent Brian Ridley said. “It won’t just be for our use.”
Builders are working on the center at Gilmer High School (GHS). Its primary purpose will be to provide a location for students to work on theater, band and chorus.
When the weather warms, GCS will likely be ready to complete the interior of the building. Its new auditorium will provide Gilmer with a great venue for large events, he said.
It’s not the only building project GCS has in progress.
The school district has also started construction on a new auxiliary gym for GHS.
The site preparations for the gym are finished. “Real progress” will begin soon, Ridley said.
“We’re waiting on the steel package to be delivered in the next couple of weeks,” he said.
The new Ellijay Elementary School is still in planning stages. Flooding risks on low ground mean the new building will have to be built on the same site as the old one.
“At the end of the day, we’re really proud of the work we’ve done to design these projects and ensure that they are great assets for our school district, things that will benefit our students and things our community can be proud of,” Ridley said.
