Construction is more than a year away
In the year the Cartecay bridge on Hwy. 52 was built, Hitler was bombing Britain, Disney’s Pinocchio hit theaters for the first time and swing music was in full swing.
It’s about time the bridge was replaced, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).
The bridge is located on Hwy. 52 East, directly before Roy Rd. It was widened in 1985.
“At GDOT, we’re always looking at our bridges and checking them,” said communications director Joe Schulman.
The bridge repair project is still in its very early stages. It will be about 15 months until GDOT awards a contract for building a new bridge.
“We’re just getting started on right of way right now,” he said.
The project will entirely replace the old bridge with a new one directly beside it. While the project is underway, people will be able to continue using the old bridge.
“It will not have a detour,” Schulman said. “Traffic will probably be slowed down.”
When the new bridge is finished, the old one will be demolished.
“We want to make sure all of our bridges are up to the latest safety standards,” Schulman said.
