A family literacy night will soon return to Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium after a two-year absence. The event will take place Friday, April 29, from 6-8 p.m., at the Bobcat football stadium on the campus of Gilmer High School. Admission is free.
The spring literacy night is open to the public, and it’s not just for school-
children and parents, noted Tiffany
Boyette, Gilmer High School assistant principal.
“It’s for everybody, ages 0-99, to come have fun,” Boyette said.
The first family literacy night at the stadium was held to good response in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions prevented it from being held the past two years. The purpose of the event is to promote literacy and encourage reading at all age levels.
“We had over 600 people come the first year,” Boyette said. “It’s a fun, safe environment for kids. They can get free (items like) books, paper and pencils, do activities and play games.”
All Gilmer County schools normally have their own literacy nights throughout the year, but the one at the stadium is the biggest, Boyette noted. The theme for this year’s event is “Reading is My Superpower.”
“Everybody has a booth, table or tent. Every school will be there with their own booth or two, and we will have high school athletic teams and clubs, local community members and (businesses) partnering with us. Last time, every kid walked away with at least five free books. Hopefully every kid will leave with some free books (this time), as well,” Boyette said.
There’s still time for more community partners to sign up and have a booth at the event. For now, about 35 have been registered, Boyette noted.
“Anyone still interested in partnering with us can reach out to me if they want to participate,” she said.
“We couldn’t do it without everybody. It was awesome (in 2019), and we hope it’s as successful, if not more so, this year.”
