Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office personnel gather around the memorial marker for late Gilmer deputy Brett Dickey as a ceremony held to honor Dickey’s memory began Monday morning outside the courthouse. Dickey was killed in the line of duty on Feb. 13, 1996.
Sheriff Stacy Nicholson reads an inspirational passage by Chuck Bowman, an Oregon fire and police chaplain, that recognizes the sacrifices made by police officers who’ve died in the line of duty. Dickey was killed while serving a warrant on a fleeing fugitive Feb. 13 1996. The memorial service has become an annual tradition for the sheriff’s office. “We never forget and we know the family never forgets. There’s really not a day that goes by that we don’t remember Brett,” said Nicholson.
Gilmer Sheriff’s Office chaplain, the Rev. Scotty Davis, speaks to those gathered in front of the courthouse before leading a prayer. “Brett Dickey is a man who is honored in so many ways. This morning, you have honored him by coming out and taking these moments,” he said.
