Recreation facility will not be located at Whitepath Fab Tech building
Gilmer County will not be locating a recreation center at the Whitepath Fab Tech building.
Commissioners rescinded their offer for the building on Industrial Blvd. when they emerged from an hour and 40 minute closed session. The executive session occured at a special called meeting Jan. 14.
“We have determined that it is not sufficient for what we need to use it for,” said Gilmer County Chair Charlie Paris.
Board Attorney David Clark expounded on the action.
“They’ve done some due diligence and looked at the site,” he said. “They felt like it would probably be better to locate at a different facility.”
A recreation facility is still front and center, according to comments from the board.
“They don’t have anything picked out at this point in time,” Clark said.
Qualifying fees
Commissioners set the qualifying fees for local offices at the meeting.
Running for Gilmer County Board of Commissioners chair will cost a candidate $2,550 for filing. Post commissioner costs $459.
Other local races and qualifying fees are: sheriff — $2,318, clerk of superior court — $1,897, probate judge — $1,897, tax commissioner — $1,897, magistrate — $1,935, coroner — $1,154 and board of education — $50.
Qualifying opens March 2 and ends March 6. Primary elections will be held
May 19.
