The Gilmer County Board of Assessors approved the bulk portion of this year’s property tax digest when meeting Friday.
The gross digest figure, which includes real and personal property values, stands at $6.6 billion, which is over $1 billion more than last year.
Chief Appraiser Theresa Gooch said the gross digest total increased by approximately 20 percent.
The entire tax digest isn’t finished as the tax commissioner’s office still must put in mobile home values and other data before the final version can be submitted to the state, Gooch noted. That will happen sometime between this month and Sept 1.
Gooch said 763 appeals were filed this year.
“We had a little bit more than we had last year. Last year we had 626. We’ll be closing out the digest with less than 1 percent of value in dispute. By law, we could be at 3 percent, but we’re well below (that),” she added.
The 2022 digest contains 34,645 parcels. The assessors office sees a couple hundred new parcels added each year, mostly due to property being divided or combined, Gooch told board members Bill Logan, Jerry Davis, Gary Engel, John Williamson and Tom Porter.
“We’re continuing to grow. We haven’t quite pushed up to 35,000 (parcels), which would put us in another category. Development is still continuing, and we’re still adding parcels. We’re getting more land division with the parcels, and the construction is following, but not as quickly,” Gooch said.
