An accidental explosion killed a father of two, according to the Gilmer County Coroner’s Office.
Marietta resident Bryan Campbell, 45, was visiting his deceased father’s home on Valley Drive, near Ray Mountain Road, where the incident took place on Feb. 21.
Deputy Coroner Maci Kiker said Campbell was trying to cut open a safe on the property when a spark from the saw ignited explosives inside it, causing them to detonate.
When his family couldn’t get in touch with him, they asked a neighbor to check on Campbell. After seeing the aftermath, the neighbor called 911. The explosion was also caught on the home’s security camera.
Kiker, the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office, local fire crews, EMS and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported to the scene.
“It was pretty cut and dry, what happened, it was just a freak accident,” Kiker noted.
Campbell is survived by his wife and two children, according to his obituary from Southern Cremations and Funerals in Marietta.
