Gang member arrested in Gilmer

Aiding other law enforcement agencies led to a drug arrest in Gilmer County of an alleged member of the Ghost Face gang.

“My guys did a great job and I am proud of them,” said Gilmer County Sheriff Stacy Nicholson.

Sheriff Nicholson was contacted by the Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley who was looking for Jeremy David Kelly.

Kelley was being sought by Gwinnett County authorities for burglary and auto theft and Roswell Police for aggravated assault on a peace officer which resulted from a vehicle chase.

Shirley said Kelley had been a resident of Stephens County and he had information he was in Gilmer County with a female, Stephanie Lyn Summers.

Sheriff Nicholson, equipped with pictures of the two, contacted deputies and headed to the area of the Comfort Inn and Suites in East Ellijay to look for a vehicle. He was riding by on his way to the courthouse.

When Nicholson arrived he saw a subject who appeared to be Kelley in the parking lot. He pulled into a parking lot where he could watch the hotel.

Deputies, along with the sheriff, watched the hotel for almost an hour when Kelley re-emerged.

As officers approached, Kelley ran around the back of the hotel. Nicholson said Kelley happened to get in a chase with a deputy who was faster than him. The deputy tased Kelley and he was taken into custody.

Summers was also arrested.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for the hotel room where the two were staying and located a pound of methamphetamine, a trafficking amount of heroin, items reportedly stolen in Gwinnett County and other narcotics.

Kelly, 32, was charged with illegal possession of controlled substance, traffic in cocaine, illegal drug or marijuana, penalties, two counts. Summers, 35, was charged with traffic in cocaine, illegal drug or marijuana.

“I want to commend my deputies for a great job of safely and effectively taking a serious drug-dealing Ghost Face gang member off the streets, and I am just glad I was able to get knee-deep in the action,” Nicholson said.
