USA Wrestling season in full swing for Gilmer grapplers

Gilmer’s middle school and youth wrestlers were busy last weekend at various tournaments held at multiple locations.

A USA Wrestling tournament held at the University of North Georgia’s Convocation Center drew Gilmer’s middle schoolers, and the Bobcats came away with 22 total placements and six champions.

In the 14-under age division, Gilmer’s first-place finishers included Bregan Berry (90 pounds), Carson Farist (95), Israel Francisco (190), Trace Morton (130), David Tercero (150) and 12U’s Tomas Tercero (180).

Pascual Escobar (110), Koby Kincaid (85), Christopher Madden (190), Elias Ramirez (140) and Bryson Shubin-Gibbs (160) all reached the finals as well and secured runner-up placements.

Atlin Chastain (285), Alex Raymundo (120) and Aldin Tiniguar (115) all finished third. Fourth-place wrestlers included Jerson Lopez (190), Taylor Schiesser (210), Queyli Solis (135) and Jovani Raymundo (160).

Gilmer’s 12U Felisha Yarborough (130) landed in third while John Dorsey (140), Carter Ortiz (73) and Domingo Velasquez (112) placed fourth.

Sarai Solis (112) and Juan Bautista (120) both won one match. Hayden Berry (90) posted a 1-0 record before he retired from the tournament because of injury.

Gilmer’s younger wrestlers were also in attendance and 10U’s Isaiah Goodwin (100) finished first, Major Morton (84) placed third, and Braelyn Nelson was fourth at 91 pounds.

In the 10U novice division, Nelson took first at 91 pounds and Madden Hopkins was a runner-up in the 100-120 weight class.

In the 8U age group, Gauge Crump won the 54-pound weight class. Parker Settle was the champion at 88 pounds and runner-up at 100. Keigan Brookshire  claimed second at 68 pounds.

The John Wayne Novice tournament was held Sunday, and Gilmer’s champions included Lillian Boyette (54), Crump (54) and Dawson Duncan (42).

Goodwin also made his way to the Southern Grind Nationals Sunday at UNG. The 10-year-old weighed in at 97 pounds and wrestled up an age division (12U) and weight class (108) and placed third.

A week prior, Goodwin and Settel attended the South Georgia Classic Battle for the Belt in Valdosta. Goodwin took first in 10U’s 100- and 110-pound weight classes. Settel was a champion at 100 pounds and runner-up at 88.
