Staley, Hamby voted to softball all-state 2nd team

Gilmer High softball players Macy Hamby and Jasmine Staley have earned all-state honors.

The Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) announced its end of the year all-state teams and Hamby and Staley were voted to Class 3A’s second team.

Staley was a utility infielder for the Cats and a four-year varsity starter. She spent most of her senior season at second base after playing third for the first three years of her GHS career.

Staley hit .461 and led GHS with 34 runs scored. She also racked up 35 hits, 22 RBIs, nine doubles and a home run.

Hamby, a sophomore, played shortstop but also saw some time at pitcher for Gilmer.

Hamby was Gilmer’s most potent offensive weapon. She led GHS with the top batting average (.500) and most hits (36), RBIs (41), doubles (10), triples (five) and home runs (four). She also scored 24 runs, which ranked second on the team.

As a pitcher, Hamby recorded a 4-2 record and 2.18 ERA.

The Lady Cat’s all-state duo helped GHS post a 17-1 region record and win its first ever fastpitch region championship. Hamby and Staley were the only players from Region 7-3A selected to the GACA’s all-state teams.

Class 3A’s state champion Ringgold led all schools with seven total all-state players, which included five on the first team.
