The Mountain Football League began its rec games last Saturday and one Gilmer team came away with a victory.
The 9-under Bobcats blanked the Chestatee War Eagles, 28-0, while the next two age groups fell just shy.
The 10U Cats were edged by Chestatee, 20-19, and the Gilmer’s 11U were clipped by Dawson County, 14-13.
The 6U Cats lost to Chestatee 27-13. This was a “bonus game,” according to MFL’s Facebook page, and the game that will count toward league standings will be played Sept. 21.
The 8U Bobcats had a bye week, and Saturday they will host Fannin County at 10:30 a.m. at Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium.
Remaining Gilmer teams will host Fannin as well. The 6U game will be at 9 a.m., the 9U game will start at noon, 10U will kick off at 1:30 p.m. and 11U will begin at 3 p.m.
Clear Creek football traveled to White County last Thursday, and the Warriors sent the Bobcats back to Ellijay with losses.
The eighth-grade Bobcats were held scoreless in a 38-0 defeat.
In the seventh-grade game, White took a 6-0 lead into the locker room at the half. Bobcat Kyle Cowart scored a touchdown in the third quarter on a 35-yard run. WCMS tacked on a final score in the fourth for a 13-6 win.
CCMS will host Dawson County Thursday with the first game set for 5 p.m.
CCMS softball has won two of its last four games, but its path to the league tournament will be an uphill battle as it is limited to the top four teams.
The Cats lost to Pickens (10-2) and pounded Towns County (16-0) two weeks ago. Last Tuesday, CCMS got the better of Dawson County, 13-5, and lost to White County the next day, 9-3.
“The Towns game was a good win because everyone got to play,” coach Nickie Rogers said. “Some of my younger kids who don’t have as much experience were able to get in the game and see live pitching.
“The first time we only beat Dawson 6-4. This time, we run-ruled them. It was a much better offensive game, and we waited to have our one (bad) inning after we were way ahead of them.”
Against Dawson, the Cats’ eight-run fourth inning put the game away. To that point, CCMS had built a 5-2 lead.
Lady Cat runs in the fourth were scored by KateLynn Carder, Gracie Smith, A.J. Allen, Allie Stanley, Alaina Miltiades, Ava Garren, Sierra Williams and Phoenix Addie.
Zoey Woody pitched for CCMS and struck out five batters to earn the win.
Clear Creek is currently 2-6 against league opponents. The Cats will likely have to win their remaining five league games and score plenty of runs in the process to reach the postseason.
“In order to even be considered a fourth seed, we have to beat Lumpkin and beat them by 16 runs because they beat us by 15,” Rogers said.
CCMS hosted White County at press deadline and will travel to Lumpkin County Thursday for a 4:15 p.m. game.
