Region tournament next for Gilmer Lady Cats

The Gilmer High Lady Cats spent the final week of the regular season on their home court and posted a 2-2 record.

Gilmer’s volleyball slate included a pair of region matches last Tuesday against the Southeast Whitfield Raiders and Ridgeland Panthers.

GHS downed Southeast 25-14 and 25-15 behind a strong performance by Elly Callihan who had 11 kills.

Ridgeland gave the Cats a good match and it was close throughout. RHS was able to win the match with set victories of 26-24 and 27-25.

Hope Colwell was there for 14 digs and Emma Callihan had 10. Colwell also had three aces versus the Panthers.

Two days later, the Cats celebrated their senior players and took on the White County Warriors and Dawson County Tigers.

The White County match needed three sets. GHS won the opening set, 25-16, and the Warriors claimed the second, 25-19. WHCS controlled the third and deciding set en route to a 15-4 win.

Elly Callihan had nine kills and four blocks, and Beth Burnette and Emma Callihan both had three kills. Colwell had 13 digs while Burnette had 10.

The day ended with a victory against Dawson (25-21 and 25-20). Elly Callihan smashed nine kills once again while Sarah Sheahan and Kadie Weaver had four apiece.

Emma Callihan racked up 16 assists, and Colwell kept the offense humming with 12 digs. Josie Reece was there for 11 digs in the victory.

“This was the fourth time we’ve seen Dawson this year and the first time we’ve beat them with their whole team playing,” coach Donna Parks said. “We played much better today and they proved they can play competitively against teams  generally thought of as hard to beat.”

GHS begins the region tournament Thursday and the remainder of the event will be Saturday at Heritage High School.
