Rec football season opens vs. Dawson

The Gilmer Bobcats opened their rec football seasons at home last Saturday versus Dawson County. Teams are divided by grades this season rather than ages, and Gilmer’s second graders won 18-14, while the fifth-grade Bobcats came out on top, 19-0.

The visiting Tigers earned wins in the first grade (28-12), third grade (26-0), fourth grade (30-0) and sixth grade (24-0) games.

In the second-grade contest, Lance West carried both times on Gilmer’s first 70-yard scoring drive, and the latter covered 16 yards for a touchdown. He also had an 85-yard scamper just before the half.

Dawson’s score came on a 24-yard run after a Bobcat fumble in the first quarter, and Gilmer held a 12-8 halftime lead. The Tigers added another touchdown in the second half, but West was there once more for Gilmer, and the Cats won by four.

Gilmer will travel to Fannin County Saturday to face the Rebels. Game times are as follows: first grade (9 a.m.), second (10:30 a.m.), third (noon), fourth (1:30 p.m.), fifth (3 p.m.) sixth (4:30 p.m.)
