Gilmer softball maintains top spot

Gilmer High took the softball field for four more region games as they sit atop the standings.

The GHS Lady Cats hosted White County last Thursday and secured a 4-3 win. They made the long trip to Cherokee Bluff the following day and destroyed the Bears, 22-2.

The Cats were back at home Monday for a doubleheader against the West Hall Spartans. GHS improved their region record to 16-1 after nabbing wins of 16-0 and 8-0.

Gilmer jumped on White immediately in the bottom of the first when leadoff hitter Jasmine Staley roped a home run over the left field fence.

The Warriors evened the score in the next inning with a bases loaded walk. A Jacie Bennett homer in the fourth pushed GHS back ahead by a run. Staley was there again in the fifth inning with a one-out double.

A hit and walk put two runners on for White in the sixth and the score was knotted at 3-3 following a two-out double.

The tie did not last long, and GHS was there to add the go-ahead run in its half of the inning. Jocelyn Birko came through with a two-out single for a 4-3 Lady Cat lead.

The Warriors were able to get two runners on base in the seventh but GHS freshman pitcher Zoey Woody and the defense were there to preserve the win.

Maddie Wright, Sarah Stallings and Makenzie Taylor all also had one hit for GHS. Woody got the win and pitched six innings. She struck out one, walked one and allowed eight hits and no earned runs.

Macy Hamby pitched an inning and gave up two earned runs off two hits while striking out one and walking one.

It took three innings to decide the game between GHS and Cherokee Bluff, though the winner was never in doubt. Gilmer scored 11 runs in the first, nine more in the second and two in the third.

GHS took advantage of 11 walks and tallied 10 hits. Hamby hit a two-run homer in the first and finished the day with two hits and four RBIs. Staley, Bennett and Birko drove in three runs apiece, while Wright, Alaina Miltiades and Anna Waddell notched two each.

Tori Hughes and Stallings both had one RBI. Waddell, Staley and Hamby  all collected two hits.

Hamby got the win and allowed one hit, a walk, no earned runs and struck out three.

GHS made short work of the West Hall Spartans in both games of Monday’s doubleheader.

Game one only needed three innings and GHS wasted little time plating nine runs in the first. Staley had another two-hit game and drove in three runs while Isabella Chastain got the win.

Game two lasted five innings. The Cats scored two in the first and third innings, one in the fourth and three more in the fifth.

Wright  had two hits and Hamby drove in a pair of runs to lead GHS offensively. Hamby tossed all five innings and got the win.

GHS hosted Dawson at press deadline.
