The Gilmer Lady Cats rolled to another decisive win on the basketball court.
GHS started region play on the road last Tuesday against the West Hall Spartans. The Cats were in command from start to finish and eviscerated West Hall for a 62-19 victory.
The win improved the Cats to 5-0 for the season, and they have outscored opponents by 33 points per game in the process.
“West Hall was a weaker team for sure, and we pretty much had control from the start,” said GHS head coach Susan Nunn. “We did not have a great first quarter, but from that point forward, we pretty much dominated from every spot. Everything was working for us.
“West Hall is just having a struggling year. All my girls got in the game multiple times so that was a good thing for us.”
Gilmer’s slow start was met by an even slower one by the Spartans. The Cats deployed their full court pressure, and West Hall was held scoreless in the first period.
Emma Callihan led GHS with 19 points on the night and netted 14 in the first half. The Cats led 8-0 after a quarter. GHS got its offense going in the second quarter to build a 27-6 lead at the break.
Seven players scored for Gilmer in the third and Alaina Miltiades came off the bench to tally six. Reserves Brooke Wilson and Sarah Mulkey added five and three points, respectively, in the second half.
The Cats took a 49-8 lead into the final quarter where much of the same continued, and Gilmer remains unbeaten on the season.
Aside from the aforementioned Lady Cats, post players Elly Callihan and Emma Deyton both scored nine points. Lark Reece added six more and Hope Colwell finished with five.
Following a positive COVID-19 test within the program last week, the Lady Cats have been quarantined. All games prior to Christmas have either been postponed or canceled. The Cats’ only region this week was against Dawson County, which has been rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m.
