Gilmer High wrestlers roll to tournament victory

Gilmer High wrestling claimed its first dual tournament title of the season.

The Bobcats made their way to Cherokee High School last Saturday and finished with an undefeated record.

Because of a last-minute cancellation, Gilmer was able to take a second team to the event, and they were runners-up in the junior varsity portion of the tournament.

“We had two teams who competed, and our first team was our No. 1s and some of the No. 2s, and we finished first and were 5-0,” coach Josh Ghobadpoor said. “Our second team was 3-1 on the day, so that was really great so see as far as depth goes and getting quality matches.”

The event’s 12 teams were split into pools, and GHS downed Dunwoody (48-15) before crushing Calhoun (73-3) and Armuchee (66-18).

The top teams from each pool then squared off, and Gilmer toppled Adairsville (63-13) and disposed of Cherokee in the finals, 54-19.

“We wrestled Cherokee already this season, but this time around, they had a few more kids (because football season ended),” Ghobadpoor said. “We wrestled really well.”

Ghobadpoor mentioned wrestlers who had standout performances, saying, “We had some matches where we really stepped up and had some overtime wins. Some of those wrestlers who had great days and undefeated records ... Caleb Waddell and Dylan Galloway looked great.

“Abel Jacinto won all of his matches. Lucas Lopez looked really tough and wrestled a really tough Cherokee wrestler in his last match. Diego Jacinto also looked really good and was 5-0. Chad Weaver had a seven-second pin, which was really neat.”

ilmer’s second group of wrestlers defeated Chestatee, Roswell and River Ridge and lost to Adairsville

GHS girls competed in a  scramble where wrestlers of equal abilities were matched against each other. Ghobadpoor noted that most girls who attended got at least one or two matches.

Gilmer hosted the Bobcat Duals Tuesday and will attend the Panther Invitational Dec. 6-7 in Jackson County.
