Gilmer High headed west last week for the Friday Night Under the Lights of Rome track meet.
The 14-team event also drew a team from Tennessee, and the GHS Bobcats placed 11th on the boys side with 25 team points.
The Lady Cats were without several of their top athletes who were playing soccer at the same time. They tallied 16.5 points and placed 10th in the girls standings.
A top-eight placement was needed in most events to score team points. The Lady Cats achieved that feat in five events, and added two more placements inside the top 10.
Taylor McCormick secured a runner-up finish for the Lady Cats in the high jump. She cleared 4’ 10” and the winning mark was 5’ 2”.
Gilmer’s Jocelyn Birko garnered the next highest individual placement in sixth with a throw of 91’ 2” in the discus. She also finished ninth in the shot put with a heave of 29’.
Emily Hancock tallied a trio of top-10 marks and times. She topped out at 7’ 6” in the pole vault for sixth, finished ninth in the 300-meter hurdles (55.70) and was 10th in the 100-meter hurdle event (18.93).
In relays, the 4x400 team of Kaitlyn Grice, Kayleigh Robbins, McCormick and Hancock clocked in at 4:42.73 for eighth.
The Bobcats totaled six top-10 performances and all accounted for team points.
Will Kiker was the Bobcats’ top athlete on the night. He took second in the pole vault with a height of 13’.
Teammate Carson Purvis was there for a pair of fourth-place times in the 1,600 meters (4:42.18) and 800 (2:08.83). Aspen Hataway claimed sixth in the pole vault (10’), and Logan Ellis secured the same position in the discus (119’).
Gilmer’s 4x400 quartet of Michael Little, Andrew Mooney, Cole Ellis and Purvis clocked in a 3:47.44 for eighth.
The top-three teams in the boys standings were New Manchester with 189 points followed by Rome (122) and Douglas County (61). Dalton (114.5) was the first-place girls team as New Manchester (95.5) placed second and Rome (87) was third.
