Gilmer High tennis, soccer dodges early season rain drops

After two weeks full of cancellations and postponements, Gilmer High tennis took the court to open its season last Wednesday.

GHS hosted Fannin, and the Bobcats and Lady Cats both earned 4-1 victories.

The match fell on the same night as GHS basketball’s second round state tournament basketball game, so the Bobcats and Lady Cats were both missing some players.

The boys used a pro-8 scoring format, and Gilmer’s No. 2 and No. 3 singles Isiah Sharp and Ethan Cole both won, 8-0. Larz Fowler and Britt Taylor earned a 8-1 win in their No. 1 doubles spot and Brad Wright and Raul Gonzalez came out on top as well, 8-3.

The Rebels were able to secure their lone victory over No. 1 Bobcat Ethan Banks.

The Lady Cats received forfeits in the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions. No. 1 doubles, Joise Reece and Morgan White, won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. To combat the plunging temperatures, the No. 2 doubles Jenna Cole and Jessica Futch played a pro-8 set and won, 8-0.

Lady Cat Sarah Sheahan dropped her the first set of her No. 1 singles match, 6-4 and won the second, 7-6. Tiebreaking scoring was used to determine the third set, and Sheahan lost, 12-10.

Gilmer will travel to Bridge Mill County Club for  Wednesday’s match against Cherokee at 4 p.m. GHS will host Pickens Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. match.

GHS soccer

Inclement weather has not been kind to GHS soccer either. The Bobcats and Lady Cats have had four varsity matches either postponed or canceled through the first three weeks of the season.

Teams were able to take the field Feb. 4 versus Class 7A North Forsyth and the Bobcats lost 3-0 while the Lady Cats were defeated, 10-0.

They were on the field 10 days later at Union County. Lady Cat Naomi Coombs netted two goals and Olivia Lykins added another as GHS came away with a 3-2 victory.

Fredy Sanchez found the back of the net for the Bobcats as they lost their second match of the season, 4-1.

GHS hosts North Murray Wednesday with games at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Gilmer will travel to LaFayette Friday with matches scheduled for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
