Gilmer Bobcats on 3 game win streak

The Gilmer High Bobcats are on a three game winning streak.

GHS secured two more soccer victories last week while outscoring opponents 15-0 in the process.

The Bobcats hosted Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Monday and obliterated the Warriors without any trouble, 9-0.

Gilmer began its region schedule Friday on the road versus the Ridgeland Panthers. The Bobcats rolled to a 6-0 win and emptied their bench in the second half to get the entire team varsity experience.

The Cats’ game versus LFO came just days after the teams met for the first time this season. GHS coach Simon Phipps varied the Bobcats’ game plan, and the score could have been worse for LFO had Gilmer timed its runs better.

“I think we just did a few things very well and made the most of the opportunities when they presented themselves to us,” Phipps said. “We made a few tweaks to the lineup and the formation because some of our players were at a band concert, and we had only played them 48 hours previously, so we wanted to give them a slightly different look.

“We need to get better at reading the offside line and playing the ball wide and in as opposed to middle and forward.”

Not only did the Bobcats rack up nine goals, but they were scored by different players, which included Cesar Garcia, Domingo Loarca, David Reynoso, Tyler Jack, Fredy Sanchez, Melvin Oxlaj, Gaby Sanchez, Camden Lyles and Julien Withrow.

Friday’s game was cold and blustery, but Gilmer was up to the task.

Garcia scored the first goal inside the 18-yard box, and Reynoso added a second in the 39th minute after a free kick was originally defended.

“We were starting to play better and pass and control the ball more,” Phipps said of Gilmer’s play as the first half came to a close. “After a few adjustments at half time, we came out looking a lot better.”

Through the first 20 minutes of the second half, GHS goals were scored by Rickey Ambrocio, Jack, Withrow and Sanchez.

“By the 60th minute, we had replaced most of our starters as the game was well in our control,” Phipps noted. “We still have a long way to go and have a very difficult region game against Northwest Whitfield on Friday. I feel like we have the potential to qualify for the state playoffs this year, but we will need to play at our very best and ride our luck.”

Gilmer has a 2-3 overall record, and Friday’s home kickoff versus Northwest is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
