GHS wins final home track meet

Gilmer High track and field hosted its final home meet of the season last week.

The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats welcomed Fannin County and Johnson high schools to Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium Wednesday and the home teams came out on top.

The Bobcats edged Fannin for first, 76-67, as Johnson scored 26 points. The Lady Cats dominated with 114 points ahead of Johnson (36) and Fannin (26).

The Lady Cats finished first in 12 events while the Bobcats recorded six top placements.

The Lady Cats’ top two finishers in each running event included: 100 meters, Karla Orduna (1st place, 13.61) and Sierra Ellis (2nd, 14.51). 200 meters,  Maddie Rosas-Wright (1st, 30.21) and Ellis (2nd, 30.40). 400 meters, Rosas-Wright (1st, 1:08.19) and Rachel Bennett (3rd, 1:11.66).

800 meters, Naomi Coombs (1st, 2:36.89) and Brenna Tierney (5th, 3:41.84). 1,600 meters, Coombs (1st, 5:48.24) and Idelma Perez-Lopez (4th, 7:58.75). 3,200 meters, Lopez-Perez (2nd, 16:51.93) and Hodaliz Amrocico-Perez (3rd, 19:20.08). 100-meter hurdles, Anna Byrd (2nd, 21.21) and 300 hurdles, Byrd (1st, 59.54). 

The 4x100 relay team of Orduna, Rosas-Wright, Ellis and Coombs (1st, 4:33.87) and relay team of Bennett, Marlee Chadwick, Taylor McCormick and Jasmine Wright (2nd, 58.43). 4x400 team of Orduna, Bennett, Rosas-Wright and Coombs (1st, 4:33.87) and the team of McCormick, Kadie Weaver, Kaitlyn Grice and Jasmine Wright (4:57.11) were third.

Lady Cats’ top finishers in field events included: high jump: McCormick (1st, 5’ 3”). Pole vault, Bennett (1st, 6’ 6”). Long jump, Orduna (2nd, 14’ 4 1/2”) and Chadwick (3rd, 12’ 11”). Shot put, Jaylnn Ledford (1st, 31’ 5”) and Jocelyn Birko (2nd, 29’ 5 1/2”). Discus, Ledford (1st, 83’ 7”) and Birko (2nd, 81’ 4”).

The Bobcats’ top-two placers in running events were: 100 meters, Cole Ellis (2nd, 12.48) and Drew Little (6th, 13.11). 200 meters, Austin Long (2nd, 25.08) and Braden Jenkins (3rd, 25.49). 400 meters, Carson Purvis (1st, 55.89) and Mario Garcia (3rd, 57.10). 800 meters, Purvis (1st, 2:04.59) and Christopher Holgate (6th, 3:17.71).

1,600 meters, Dylan Byrd (2nd, 5:13.10) and Long (4th, 5:25.20). 3,200 meters, Byrd (1st, 11:03.81). 110 hurdles, Landon Pike (2nd, 17.93) and 300 hurdles (1st, 44.79). 

The 4x100 relay team of Long, Purvis, Jenkins and Ellis (48.71) took second. In the 4x400, the team of Bentley, Jenkins, Pike and Purvis (3:59.45) were runners-up, and the team of Long, Nate Mooney, Garcia and Ellis (4:26.24) landed in fourth.

Bobcats’ top finishers in field events were: Ayden Fountain, (1st, 5’ 2”) and Nathan Jones (2nd, 5’). Pole vault, Will Kiker (1st, 11’ 6”) and Bentley (2nd, 9’). Long jump, Jenkins (1st, 18’ 1”) and Little (2nd, 16’ 9”). Triple jump, Pike (3rd, 38’ 1 1/2”) and Jenkins (4th, 36” 4 1/2”). 

Also, shot put, Logan Ellis (6th, 29’ 4 1/4”) and Cole Ellis (7th, 28’ 5 1/4”). Discus, Logan Ellis (1st, 110’ 2 1/2”) and Ty Lambert (5th, 81’ 5”).

The track season will continue when classes resume.
