GHS track attends 1st invitational of season

Gilmer High’s track and field season continued last Saturday.

GHS attended the 12-team Southeast High Invitational in Dalton. The Lady Cats achieved 12 point-scoring placements and topped out at 69 for fifth in the girls standings. The Bobcats placed seventh among the boys with 44 and scored points in 11 of 17 events.

Image removed.Lady Cat Naomi Coombs was the top 800-meter runner once again and claimed first place by a second with a time of 2:33. She also finished third in the 1,600-meter run in 6:03.

Gilmer’s 4x400 relay team of Coombs, Reagan Boling, Taylor McCormick and Emily Hancock were the first to cross the finish line in 4:33

McCormick and Hancock also secured runner-up placements. McCormick cleared 5’ in the high jump, and Hancock topped out at 7’ in the pole vault. Hancock recorded times of 18.73 in the 100-meter hurdles and 54.88 in the 300-meter event for a pair of third-place finishes. 

Boling was fourth in the 200 meters (29.29) and eighth in the long jump (14’ 5”). Sixth-place finishers included McCormick in the 400 meters (1:10.67), Jocelyn Birko in the shot put (28’) and the 4x100 relay (56.28) team of Birko, Kayleigh Robbins, Boling and Coombs.

The top Bobcat on the day was Will Kiker, who cleared 10’ 6” in the pole vault for second place. Carson Purvis turned in a third-place time of 2:05 in the 800 meters and was fourth in the 1,600-meter run at 4:51.

Aspen Hataway eclipsed the 9’ 1/2” mark for fourth in the pole vault. The GHS 4x100 team of Purvis, Andrew Mooney, John Keener and Dylan Byrd teamed up for fourth with a time of 3:54.

Bobcat Logan Ellis tossed the discus 113’ for fifth place, and sixth-place finishers included Keener in the 800 (2:18) and Byrd in the 3,200 meters (11:33).

Keener also took seventh in the 1,600 (5:07), as did teammates Carson Hughes in the 110-meter hurdles (19.32) and Luke Bryant in the discus (104’ 9”).

Calhoun won the boys title with 141.5 points as Heritage (85.5) and Cass (85) rounded out the top three. The top girls teams were Gordon Lee (112), Calhoun (96) and Heritage (87.5).
