GHS tennis continues unbeaten season

Rainy conditions limited the Gilmer High tennis team to one match last week.

The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats traveled to Pickens High Monday and downed their southern rival. It was the second time the teams had met this season, except this time it counted toward region standings.

Much like their first match, this one also concluded with GHS winning in commanding fashion. The Lady Cats earned a 5-0 sweep while the Bobcats notched a 4-1 victory.

Lady Cat single Hope Colwell faced the most resistance in the No. 1 position. After a 7-5 opening set win, she rolled to a 6-1 victory in the second.

In the remaining singles matches, Gilmer’s Emma Callihan and Ellie Teague earned respective wins of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.

Gilmer completed the team sweep on the doubles court. The No. 1 team of Sarah Sheahan and Beth Burnette cruised to victory without losing a game while the No. 2 team of Joise Reece and Morgan White secured a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

The Bobcats’ lone loss occurred on the No. 3 singles court where they forfeited. Top single Bryson Sisson won 6-0, 6-1 and Isaac Bradshaw was victorious by a 6-2, 6-1 margin in the No. 2 slot.

The No. 1 doubles team of Luke Wimpey and Mason Hadden did not drop a game in their straight set victory. The No. 2 squad of Kaden Reece and Brady Sanford won Gilmer’s fourth match of the day, 6-3, 6-1.

The Bobcats and Lady Cats are both 5-0 on the season, which has been suspended as GHS and surrounding schools have closed to limit the spread of Coronavirus.
