GHS splits region volleyball matches

The Gilmer High Lady Cats came away with another winning week on the volleyball court.

The Cats were in Dawsonville last Tuesday and secured a win over the hometown Tigers while dropping its match against the North Hall Trojans.

GHS closed out the week at North Murray Thursday and needed two sets to defeat the Mountaineers.

While Dawson won the first set 25-19, GHS took the next two, 25-14 and 15-13 for a region victory. Lady Cat Hope Colwell was there for five aces on the day.

The top three hitters included Elly Callihan (nine kills), Taylor McCormick (five) and Emma Deyton with four. Emma Callihan led the Cats with 10 assists and seven digs. Beth Burnette tallied eight assists. Kadie Weaver had five digs followed by Burnette, Deyton and Colwell with four apiece.

North Hall beat GHS in two sets, 25-19 and 25-18. McCormick led GHS with six kills. Emma Callihan was the assist leader with nine, and the most digs belonged to Deyton (eight), Colwell (seven) and Emma Callihan (six).

Gilmer’s nonregion match against North Murray saw the Cats win in two sets, 25-14 and 25-17.

Elly Callihan reached double digit kills with 10, Deyton and Weaver had four each and McCormick tallied three. Delivering those assists were Emma Callihan (13) and Burnette (seven).

Deyton led the Cats with four aces and Colwell had six digs.

The junior varsity Lady Cats lost to North Murray in two sets.  Dawson (26-24, 25-19) and North Hall (25-16, 25-15) were victorious as well over GHS.

Gilmer has a 14-7 overall record and traveled to West Hall at press deadline. 

GHS will host Pickens Wednesday and Fannin Thursday with matches starting at 5 p.m. both days.
