Chastain named pitcher of year, selected to senior all-star game
Gilmer High announced its all-region softball and all-area volleyball players last week.
Players were selected by region coaches’ votes, and Isabella Chastain took home one of the top honors for GHS softball. She was voted Region 7-3A pitcher of the year to go with her spot on the all-region first team.
Chastain posted an 11-3 record and 1.80 earned-run average in 16 appearances. She struck out 123 on the season, walked 20 and allowed 21 earned runs in 81 2/3 innings. She was also selected to pitch in the Georgia Dugout Club’s Senior All-Star Game.
Joining Chastain on the first team were shortstop Macy Hamby, second baseman Jasmine Staley, catcher Maddie Wright, third baseman Taylor Elliott and outfielder Jacie Bennett.
Hamby led GHS offensively in batting average (.500), hits (36), RBIs (41), doubles, (10) triples (five) and home runs (four). She also scored 24 runs, which ranked second on the team.
On the mound, Hamby posted a 4-2 record and 2.18 ERA.
Staley hit .461 and led the team with 34 runs scored. She also tallied 35 hits, 22 RBIs, nine doubles and one homer.
Wright batted .375 and racked up 28 hits, 15 RBIs and scored 23 runs. She recorded six doubles and three triples and was a stalwart behind the plate defensively.
Elliott was there for a .352 batting average and had 19 hits and 19 RBIs. She scored 12 runs and hit one home run.
Bennett had a .317 batting average for the season. She also totaled 15 runs scored, 19 hits, 11 RBIs and two home runs.
Gilmer’s lone all-area volleyball selection was outside hitter Elly Callihan. She finished her junior season with school record 256 kills and added 19 blocks, 37 digs, five aces and three assists. She set the single-game kills record with 20.
