GHS soccer crushes Phoenix

Gilmer High School began its soccer season at home last Tuesday, and the Bobcats and Lady Cats both won handily.

GHS hosted the Sonoraville Phoenix, and each match ended 10-0 in the Cats’ favor.

The Lady Cats were up first and the Phoenix aided Gilmer’s cause with a pair of own goals. Gilmer’s Naomi Coombs and Olivia Lykins both netted three goals while Amalia Perez  and Laura Tercero scored one apiece.

“We have a strong group of seniors this year, and our freshman group is fitting in well and adding great things to the team,” said coach April Nicholson.

“Ashley Spagnola played in goal for the first half, and she did a great job keeping the sheet clean. We were able to put some different faces on the field and try some new girls in different places.”

The Bobcats surged to a 5-0 halftime lead and duplicated their scoring performance over the game’s final 40 minutes.

“I am happy for the boys just to be playing after what happened last year,” coach Simon Phipps said. “We have a new region this year, and I expect there to be some really tough games for the boys. We only have four seniors on the roster and two of them are starters, so we are young, but we are enthusiastic.”

Bobcat Tyler Jack had a big night with four goals, teammates Julien Withrow scored three and Christian Oxlaj, Camden Lyles and Gabriel Sanchez had one each.
