GHS Lady Cats claim XC championship

The Gilmer High Lady Cats ruled the trail at Clear Creek Middle School.

The North Georgia Cross-Country Championship was held last Tuesday, and the GHS Lady Cats took first while the Bobcats placed second in the boys 5K.

The girls portion of the event consisted of six teams and five had enough runners to qualify for a team score. Gilmer’s Naomi Coombs was second overall with a time of 23:32 behind Calhoun’s Anna Gibson (23:15).

Also finishing in the top 10 were Lady Cats Madison Stanley (fifth, 23:53) and Amalia Perez (10th, 25:30), while Helana Garland placed 11th in 25:36. Mallory Henson was the Cats’ fifth runner to finish and placed 22nd at 28:10.

Laney Hensley finished in 31:13 for 33rd place.

Five teams participated in the boys 5K with four turning in a qualifying score. 

Calhoun’s Felipe Barrios was nearly 1:30 ahead of the field in first with a time of 18:01. The next two to cross the finish line were Bobcats Carson Purvis (19:29) in second place and Dylan Byrd (19:43) in third.

Gilmer’s John Nix claimed ninth in 21:05, and he was followed by Austin Long (16th, 21:46) and Michael Little (17th, 21:47) to round out Gilmer’s point scorers.

Remaining GHS runners included Larz Fowler (18th, 21:53), Talyn Messner (20th, 22:15), Damian Pratt (30th, 23:35), Andrew Mooney (31st, 23:41), Ethan Cole (33rd, 23:54), Matthew Grice (37th, 24:59) and Christopher Chun Bell (38th, 25:01).

Behind Calhoun (37 points) in the boys standings were Gilmer (47), Fannin County (51) and Northwest Whitfield (97).

The Lady Cats’ nipped Southeast Whitfield  for first, 50-51. Fannin (69) was third followed by Calhoun (75) and Northwest (99).
