GHS Lady Cats bury Spartans

Gilmer High came away with a lopsided softball victory on a night when it honored its senior players.

The Lady Cats hosted the West Hall Spartans last Thursday, and patience at the plate led to Gilmer batters drawing 11 walks. The Cats added seven hits and came away with an 18-2 victory in three innings.

Gilmer traveled to Cherokee Bluff Friday, and consistent offensive production allowed the Bears to earn a 7-2 home victory.

The Spartans struck for both of their runs in their first at-bat. WHHS collected four singles and a double for an early 2-0 advantage.

Lady Cat Maddie Wright scored Gilmer’s first run in its half of the inning when Macy Hamby reached on a an error. Over the next two innings, GHS added nine and eight runs, respectively.

In the second, GHS gladly accepted six walks. Alaina Miltiades knocked in two runs for GHS with a line drive to center. Wright had a RBI single in the inning and also reached on a fielder’s choice to score a run. By the third out, Gilmer’s lead stood at 10-2.

Hamby’s triple plated Taylor Elliott to get the offense going in the third. Hamby trotted home when Zoey Woody grounded out. Consecutive base hits by Jocelyn Birko and Jacie Bennett followed, and the former scored on a wild pitch. GHS moved ahead 15-2 when Miltiades grounded out for her third RBI.

GHS batted around again, and Elliott’s bases-loaded walk increased Gilmer’s lead to 14 before a two-run double by Hamby  scored the Cats’ final runs.

Woody pitched all three innings, struck out one, walked one and allowed five hits.

Hamby had two hits and four RBIs. Wright finished with two hits and a pair of RBIs, and Hughes collected two RBIs as well.

Cherokee Bluff plated at least one run in each of the first four innings. The Bears tallied a run in the first and third innings, two in the second and three in the fourth.

A one-out Elliott double scored Gilmer’s first run in the fourth inning. Birko singled home the Cats’ last run in the seventh.

In addition to Birko and Elliott, Hamby and Wright both had a hit on the day.

Hamby started the game and pitched two innings and surrendered four hits, three earned runs and struck out three while walking five. Woody pitched four innings and was credited with two earned runs and five hits.

GHS is 3-15 overall and will host Cherokee Bluff for a Thursday doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m.
