Seasonal rains have made the Gilmer High golf season sloppy and uncertain. Matches and practices have continually been canceled or postponed, but the Bobcats and Lady Cats were able to take on a pair of rivals over the past two weeks.
GHS traveled to Old Toccoa Farm Golf Club March 22 and were defeated by the Fannin County Rebels. The Bobcats dropped their four-person match, 200-228. The girls competition used two golfers per side and the Lady Cats fell, 93-110.
Bobcat scores were carded by Jeremy Bertolini (55), Carson Bentley (57), Gabe Lifsey (58) and Caden Farist (58).
Lady Cat Clara Smith posted a 50 and Alexis Sirmans shot a 61.
GHS faced Pickens at Bent Tree Golf Club last Monday and split the match. The Lady Cats notched a three-person score of 172 to win by 13 strokes. The Bobcats lost, 166-230.
Smith was the top girls golfer once again with a 55. Maddie Wright tallied a score of 59, and Sirmans finished with a 60.
For the Bobcats, Lifsey led the way with a 53 and was followed by Bentley (54), Bertolini (60) and Farist (62).
GHS coach James Speece discussed the season so far and the challenges the team has faced.
“Weather is constantly a factor that affects not only our scheduling but preparation as well. Golf is a tough sport and without the necessary hours on the range, it’s hard to make huge strides toward goals that we set for ourselves,” he said.
“However, I think that we continue to make progress every week in different aspects. Players work on their weaknesses after each round, and new players are emerging as potential starters of the future. We are optimistic in the direction our program is heading.”
