Gilmer High cross-country was one of seven teams in attendance at the North Georgia Championships.
The annual 5K race was held at Clear Creek Middle School last Tuesday. The GHS Bobcats placed third as a team with 81 points, and the Lady Cats finished fifth on the girls side with 106 points.
Dawson County’s Ethan Smith won the boys race in 18:47, and he was followed by Gilmer’s Carson Purvis (19:18) in second place and Zach Bobak (19:59) in fourth. Bobcat John Keener placed 12th in 20:51, as Melvin Oxlaj (22:09, 25th) and Talyn Mesner (23:32, 38th) rounded out Gilmer’s point scorers.
Dawson’s Anna Lecave set the girls pace in 23:05. Madison Stanley was the top Lady Cat runner, and she claimed third place with a time of 24:06. Gilmer’s Helana Garland and Kamryn Baxter finished in 21st and 22nd place with respective times of 27:57 and 27:57.10.
Sofia Lykins (27th, 28:34) and Haley Wilson (33rd, 29:15.1) also helped GHS to its fifth-place finish and they were followed by Carli Becerra (31:52, 43rd) and Laney Hensley (31:58, 44th).
Remaining Bobcat runners were Christopher Chun-Bell (24:07, 41st), Michael Little (25:11, 48th), Matthew Grice (25:46, 55th), Larz Fowler ( 26:26, 57th), Damian Pratt (26:36, 59th), Jesse Hernandez (26:36.10, 60th), Andrew Mooney (26:39, 61st), Drew Little (26:44, 62nd) and Will Capstick (26:44.10, 63rd).
Boys standings: Dawson (42 points), Fannin (53), Gilmer (81), Calhoun (102), Union (123) and Rabun (136).
Girls final standings: Dawson (57), Rabun (60), Union (71) Fannin (87), Gilmer (106), Calhoun (133) and Towns (197).
HS was in Cartersville Saturday for the Wingfoot Invitational. The event offered an A and B division and Gilmer runners competed in the latter. The Bobcats’ day ended with a fifth-place finish (198 points) and the Lady Cats took eighth (221) in their race.
Bobcat point scorers included Purvis (9th, 17:43.90), Bobak (25th, 18:30.80), Keener (30th, 18:35.30), Little (68th, 19:49.90) and Mesner (81st, 20:16). Oxlaj finished 86th in 20:16 and Chun-Bell was 125th at 22:03.60.
Top Lady Cats included Stanley (16th, 22:29.20), Garland (46th, 24:23.60), Lykins (55th, 24:59.90), Baxter (58th, 25:01.50), Wilson (59th, 25:13.40), Hensley (80th, 26:31.70) and Becerra (89th, 27:54.5).
Northview (46) won the 13-team girls race and was followed by Kell (75) and Whitfield Academy (133).
Nineteen boys teams were in attendance and Northview (85), Armuchee (90) and Brunswick (126) were the top three teams.
