GHS cheer opens 2019 season at Coahulla Creek

Gilmer High cheerleaders began their competitive season Sept. 28 at Coahulla Creek High School.

Three teams competed in the Class 4A division, and Ridgeland placed first, GHS took second and Northwest Whitfield was third.

Gilmer took the floor with a younger team compared to years past. An injury also forced GHS to compete with one less stunt group than normal, which impacted its placement.

“We were down a group, and I think they did a good job to try and make up for some of that and not let it affect their overall performance,” coach Naomi Esparza said. “We had decent scores in our running and standing tumbling and that was a plus. Our stunts and the remainder of our routine could stand to have some improvement.

“Overall, we have a really young team and I think they’re trying to work out some of the newness they feel coming to the varsity level.”

GHS will travel to Creekview High School for Saturday’s competition.
