GHS Bobcats 3rd at Adairsville meet

Gilmer High swimmers were in the pool a final time ahead of the holiday.

The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats attended Adairsville’s Thankful to Compete meet last Saturday, which drew 17 teams. The Bobcats placed third in the boys standings with 210 points, and the Lady Cats (114) nabbed seventh among the girls.

Bobcat Law Lykins led the pack in the 200-yard freestyle. His time of 2:03 was nearly four seconds faster than second place.

The Bobcats also recorded a trio of top-five finishes in relays. In the 200-yard freestyle, Lykins, Cheyne Smith, Ian Berry and Jacob Kucera placed third in 1:39.75 to qualify for the state meet. The Cats also snagged third in the 400 freestyle relay when Lykins, Macca Teeranangsu, Aspen Hataway and Larz Fowler clocked in at 4:30.28.

In the 200 medley relay, the quartet of Berry, Hayden Morrison, Kucera and Smith finished fifth (2:03.81). Gilmer’s second team in the 200 free of Morrison, Teeranangsu, Tanner Attebery and Fowler placed 10th (2:01.81).

Fowler also came in third in the 200 free at 2:29.63 and was 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:20.59. Morrison clocked in at 46.76 in the 100 free for third place and claimed 12th in the 50 free (26.99).

Also competing in the 50 free were Kucera (fifth, 24.33), Berry (sixth, 25.72), Smith (10th, 26.48), Hataway (23rd, 30.41), Attebery (59th, 46.44) and Teeranangsu (68th, 58.01). Kucera finished ninth in the 100 free (56.23) and was followed by teammates  Berry (11th, 59.67), Hataway (23rd, 1:15.40) and Attebery (37th, 1:26.03).

Smith also swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.50 for 13th, while Teeranangsu finished 29th in the 100-yard backstroke (2:16.67).

Esther Bowman was the top individual Lady Cat for GHS. She placed fourth in the grueling 500-yard freestyle (7:23.43) and also took seventh in the 100-breast (1:32.56). Teammate Taylor McCormick claimed seventh in the 50 free in 29.88 and finished 11th in the 200 free at 2:46.14.

McCormick teamed up with Yana Jones, Addison Emond and Elizabeth Kucera for seventh in the 400 free in 5:29.20. In the 200 freestyle relay, Bowman and McCormick were joined by Emond and Evan May for an 18th place time of 2:19.37.

In the 50 free, remaining times and placements belonged to May (20th, 32.01), Kucera (33rd, 34.52), Jones (54th, 36.91) and Emond (53rd, 39.93).

Kucera was also 17th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:31.96), May placed 24th in the 100 free (1:16.63) and Emond finished 27th in the 100 breast (1:55.65).

Etowah (417.5) was the top girls team followed by Union Grove (264) and Eagles Landing (225). Etowah finished first in the boys standings over Adairsville, 324-269.
