The Gilmer High Bobcats continued their nonregion baseball schedule last week and posted a 2-2 record.
GHS traveled to Union County Monday and lost an extra inning game to the Panthers, 7-6. The Cats were on the road again Thursday versus Pickens and the Dragons won, 13-3.
Gilmer closed out the week at North Murray High for a pair of games. GHS started the day with a 12-7 win over the host Mountaineers before downing the Christian Heritage Lions, 4-2.
Union scored a run in each of its first two at-bats. GHS got two runs back in the second, added another in the third and took a 5-2 lead after a two-run fourth.
UCHS plated a run in the fourth, six and seventh innings to tie the score. After scoreless eighth and ninth innings, GHS pulled ahead in the 10th. Spencer Merritt led off the inning with a double and advanced to third when Colton Nunn grounded out.
Merritt scored on a Carter Jones ground out, but Union still had life. In its half of the 10th, an error and hit batter moved a Panther into scoring position. A two-out double scored a pair of runs for a Union win.
Three of Gilmer’s runs were unearned. Merritt led the way with three hits and scored two runs, and Branson Teague had two hits. Jones knocked in two runs and Jess Buckner and Jones each had one RBI.
Pickens needed five innings to beat the Bobcats. They scored six runs in the first, two in the second, four in the third and one more in the fifth. GHS allowed three unearned runs and used five pitchers on the day.
Merritt and Brock Titus each had two hits and drove in a run, and Seth Darling recorded one RBI as well.
GHS got back on track Saturday versus North Murray. Gilmer plated a pair of runs in the first and three more in the second to lead, 5-4. NMHS slipped ahead by one after the third inning before GHS put the game away in the fourth.
The Bobcats scored five runs in the inning, and Merritt got things rolling with a two-run double before an RBI single by Gabe Wolfson. A Mountaineer error on a bases loaded bunt by Nunn moved GHS ahead, 9-6. GHS added a 10th run on an ensuing NMHS error.
Gilmer tacked on an insurance run in the fifth and seventh innings.
Merritt had another solid day with three hits and four RBIs. Wolfson collected two hits and three RBIs, while Buckner had a pair of hits and knocked in two runs.
Wolfson started the game and gave up four earned runs, three hits, walked four and struck out one. Ethan McCollum tossed five innings for the win to go with three strike outs and two walks. He gave up four hits and three earned runs.
GHS defeated Christian Heritage, and the Lions committed three errors in the first inning that led to all four of Gilmer’s runs being unearned.
The Lions scored a run in its half of the first and a final run in the third.
Grant Cochran gave GHS five innings on the mound and earned the win. He allowed four hits, two earned runs, five walks, and he struck out one. Billy Goswick and Jones pitched the next two innings, respectively. Goswick surrendered a hit and a walk while Jones got the save.
GHS is 3-3 overall and continues nonregion play at home Wednesday and Friday versus Fannin and Pickens, repsecitvely. Both games will start at 5:30 p.m.
