GHS attends second invitational of track and field season

Gilmer High track and field athletes were in Dalton for last Saturday’s Southeast Invitational.

Eleven teams made their way to Southeast Whitfield High School, and the GHS Bobcats (57 points) and Lady Cats (91.3) both placed fourth in their respective team standings.

The Lady Cats finished in the top eight on 13 occasions to tally team points, which included five top placements.

Finishing first were Lady Cats Naomi Coombs in the 800- (2:30) and 1,600-meter (5:41) runs, Emily Hancock in the pole vault (7’ 6”), Karla Orduna in the long jump (14’ 8”) and Jalynn Ledford in the discus throw (94’ 5 1/2”).

Taking third were Sierra Ellis in the 200-meter run (30.04), Hancock in the 300-meter hurdles (56.09) and Jasmine Wright in the high jump (4’ 8”). 

Anna Byrd clocked in at 59.09 for fifth in the 300-meter hurdles. In the 100-meter dash, Orduna finished seventh (14.06) and Ellis was eighth (14.07).

The Cats also secured second in the 4x400 relay (4:40) and seventh in the 4x100 (57.03).

The Bobcats had 12 top-eight placements on the day, and Carson Purvis led the way with the best time in the 800-meter run at 2:04.

Bobcat Landon Pike turned in a time of 45.50 for second in the 300-meter hurdles and was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (19.03). Will Kiker topped out at 10’ 6” in the pole vault for third. 

Fifth-place finishers included Nate Mooney in the 1,600-meter run (5:23), Dylan Byrd in the 3,200 meters (11:11), Logan Bentley in the pole vault (9’ 6”), Pike in the triple jump (37’ 8”) and Logan Ellis in the discus (102’ 4 1/2”).

J.B. Sanford posted a time of 20.00 in the 110 hurdles for eighth, and Luke Bryant secured the same position in the discus (92’ 8 1/2’). GHS was third in the 4x400 relay at 3:53.

Heritage finished atop the boys standings with 118 points. Coahulla Creek edged Calhoun for second, 112.8-108. Calhoun (177) ran away with the girls title ahead of Pickens (92) and Cass (84).
