The Clear Creek Lady Cats won three league basketball games last week.
CCMS eighth graders began the week with a 43-39 loss to Union County before rebounding to defeat Lumpkin County, 49-28. The Cats closed out the week with a 47-20 loss to White County.
The seventh-grade Cats downed both Union (45-40) and White (39-21) with a 37-31 loss to Lumpkin sandwiched between.
Eighth grade
Union built a strong lead Monday and CCMS never recovered. A nine-point Lady Cat deficit after the first was extended to 35-17 at halftime.
CCMS spent most of the second half at the free-throw line where the Cats attempted 27 and made 12. Despite a solid comeback attempt, CCMS fell four points shy at the end.
Bree Burnette scored 11 points on the day, Aliza Chastain added nine, and Madison Bradshaw finished with eight for CCMS.
The Cats reversed their fortunes two days later against Lumpkin. Chastain and Bradshaw were both in double figures with 19 and 11 points, respectively.
They helped CCMS achieve a 14-9 lead after a quarter and a 26-13 edge by the break. The second half was much of the same as the Cats secured their lone win of the week.
Burnette was there for seven points, and Carly Becerra, Grace Bramlett and Kamryn Baxter all scored four.
CCMS had trouble getting its offense going Thursday versus White. The Cats scored five points in the first quarter and four more in the second to trail at the half, 34-9.
Clear Creek was held scoreless in the third quarter, and White put the game away en route to a 27-point win. Chastain scored seven points for CCMS, Bradshaw and Bramlett were both there for four and Baxter added three.
Seventh grade
After falling behind 18-15 at the half to Union, CCMS tied the score at 26-all with a quarter to play. Overtime was needed when the teams matched each other point for point in the fourth and the game was tied 36-36 at the end of regulation.
Both Burnette and Madison Hall made a three pointer in overtime to give CCMS a boost as Union’s four points all came from the free-throw line and the Cats won by five.
Hall led Clear Creek’s charge with 18 points against Union and made three shots from beyond the three-point arc on the day. Gracie Pritchett added eight, Jaylee McDaniel scored seven, Chelsey Griggs had six and Burnette tallied five.
CCMS led Lumpkin by four points after a quarter and 17-15 at halftime. The Cats struggled in the second half and LCMS slipped ahead 24-22 going into the fourth.
The Indians had their most productive quarter to close out the game for a six-point win.
McDaniel was the Cats’ go-to scorer with 12 points.
Burnette scored all 12 of her team-leading points in the first quarter versus White.
Hall was there for a pair of threes in the second quarter, and CCMS opened a 29-6 advantage at the half. CCMS only scored two points in the third quarter as White cut the Cats’ lead to 31-16 entering the fourth.
Grace Gaitonaglou tallied all six of her points in the fourth to give CCMS an offensive spark on their way to an 18-point win.
Hall added eight points for CCMS, and Griggs and Sarah Dale scored four apiece.
