CCMS Lady Cats end regular season with 2 wins

The Clear Creek Middle School Lady Cats won two of four games last week.

On the road Tuesday, CCMS seventh graders earned a 45-38 win over the Lumpkin County Indians while the eighth grade Cats fell, 55-22. When CCMS hosted the Union County Panthers Thursday, the seventh grade snagged a 54-46 victory before the eighth graders were edged, 49-47.

The seventh-grade Cats’ strong first half against Lumpkin allowed them to take control of the game quickly. Six Lady Cats scored at least six points on the day, and they took a 10-4 lead into the second quarter and were ahead 29-12 by the half.

While LCMS upped its offense in the second half, it could not catch the Cats. CCMS led 40-22 going into the fourth where the Cats withstood a Lumpkin rally for a seven-point win.

Aliza Chastain scored 11 for CCMS and was followed by Bree Burnette’s and Madison Bradshaw’s seven as Carly Becerra, Grace Bramlett and Chelsay Griggs all scored six. Kamryn Baxter added two points.

CCMS earned a comeback win against Union. The Panthers led 11-10 after a quarter and 27-22 at the half.

Chastain scored 14 of her team-high 18 points in the second half as Bramlett added nine over he final two quarters. 

UCMS still maintained a two-point advantage entering the fourth. However, Clear Creek’s offense came alive for 20 points to overtake Union for an eight-point victory.

Burnette scored 13 for CCMS and Bramlett added 11 more points. Bradshaw and Becerra both had four points, Gracie Pritchett finished with three and Addie Vick had one.

For the eighth-grade Cats versus Lumpkin, the Indians’ offense remained consistent throughout and they jumped to a 12-4 lead and were ahead at the half, 20-13. 

LCMS pushed its lead to 32-20, and its 23-point fourth quarter allowed the Indians to seal their win.

Sarah Mulkey scored six for CCMS, Katelynn Carder added five while Chastain tallied four and Lucy Ray finished with three. Libby Pike and Bramlett both scored two points.

Versus Union at home, Ray had a big scoring night with 16 points, and nine came in the opening quarter as CCMS led, 15-12. The Cats still held a 24-19 advantage at the half.

The teams matched each other point for point in the third quarter. Ray added seven more to her tally and Carder knocked down a pair of three pointers.

The fourth began with CCMS ahead, 39-34. UCMS outscored the Cats 15-8 in the fourth to pull ahead of Clear Creek for a two-point win.

Carder scored 11 points on the day, Mulkey had nine and Becerra added six. Marley Boatwright scored three and Burnette tallied two.

The eighth-grade Cats began the league tournament at Tuesday’s press deadline against Pickens. 

The seventh-grade Cats will face Dawson County Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Union County Middle School.
