Bobcats sweep Pickens

The Gilmer High Bobcats sent rival Pickens back to Jasper with a loss.

The two met on the tennis court last Tuesday, and the Bobcats swept the Dragons, 5-0. The Lady Cats dropped their match to the Dragonettes, 3-2.

Gilmer was in Murray County the following day, and the Bobcats and Lady Cats both lost 4-1 to the Indians.

Bobcat singles only lost five games in three matches versus Pickens. Both Brett Becker and Kaden Reece won 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. No. 3 single Isaac Bradshaw came out on top in similar fashion 6-1, 6-2.

Doubles matches were more competitive but Gilmer earned two more wins. The No. 1 tandem of Law Lykins and Ethan Cole won 7-6 (7-2 tiebreaker), 7-5. Gavin Berger and Larz Fowler were victorious in the No. 2 spot, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).

The Lady Cats were still shorthanded versus Pickens as some of their starters finished the basketball season.

Ellie Teague rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 2 singles match as teammate Jenna Cole won, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). Top Lady Cats single  Morgan White lost 6-4, 6-2. Doubles Jessica Futch and Hannah Walker were defeated 6-4, 7-5, and the No. 2 team of Lyrie Lowman and Charlotte Davenport fell 6-2, 6-4.

Versus Murray, top doubles Futch and Walker won 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) for the Lady Cats’ only win of the day. Davenport and Lowman won their second set 6-2, but dropped both the first and third sets, 6-3.

GHS Singles White (6-3, 6-0), Teague (6-1, 6-0) and Cole (6-1, 6-0) lost.

The Bobcats’ lone victory over Murray was secured by Berger and Cole. Following an opening set loss of 6-4, they closed out the match with wins of 6-3, 6-4.

Bradshaw and Lykins lost in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, as did singles Becker (6-0, 6-0) and Reece (6-3, 6-3). Bryson Sisson won the second set, 7-5, sandwiched between losses of 6-3 and 6-1.

A week prior, the Bobcats and Lady Cats both swept Fannin County using pro-8 scoring. Versus Class 7A Forsyth Central, the Bulldogs were victorious over the Bobcats and Lady Cats without losing a set.

The Bobcats and Lady Cats are both 2-2 in nonregion play.
