Gilmer came up just short in their latest region series.
The GHS Bobcats faced the Adairsville Tigers (12-4) last week and were on the road for games one and three. AHS hosted the opener Wednesday and the Cats were limited to two hits as the Tigers pulled out a 2-1 win. Game two was a pitchers’ duel through four innings. AHS took the lead in the fifth and maintained it for a 5-2 victory.
The fifth was the Tigers’ best offensive inning in game three as well. The Cats were able to trim the Tigers’ lead in the seventh but were unable to plate the runner in scoring position and lost, 5-4.
After a pair of three-game region series, the Bobcats are still searching for their first win.
Gilmer strung together its only hits in the third inning of game one. Rob Mosley’s two-out single was followed by Blake Grizzle’s double to center for the Cats’ only run. AHS scored a run an inning prior. The Tigers scored their second run in the fourth and it came with two outs and was unearned. GHS was unable to answer over its final three at-bats.
Cooper Cochran tossed all six innings and gave up six hits for one earned run while walking two and striking out one.
Gilmer put the first run on the scoreboard of game two in the third. Peyton Ocobock doubled to the right-center field gap to start the inning. Zander Shute’s sacrifice bunt moved Ocobock into scoring position, and he trotted home on Grizzle’s single to right.
Landen McClure gave up one hit through 4 1/3 innings. The first came in the third. AHS managed a double with a runner on first, but he was thrown out by left fielder Rob Mosley at third base.
The Tigers’ four-run fifth inning was achieved without a hit. With a runner on first and one out, McClure fielded a bunt. His throw to first glanced off the runner’s helmet and into right field. A run scored to tie the game.
After a hit batter and walk loaded the bases, Slade Smith relieved McClure on the mound. AHS plated a run on a fielder’s choice. An ensuing fielder’s choice resulted in two more runs scoring for a 4-1 lead.
Grizzle accounted for Gilmer’s final run in the sixth. He sent a solo homer over the left-center field fence. AHS added an unearned run in the seventh.
GHS pitching: McClure 4 1/3 IP, 1 H, 4 BB, 6 K. Holt 2 1/3 IP, 1 H, 1 K. Ocobock 1/3 IP, 1 H.
Gilmer got its offense going in game three. The Cats belted 11 hits but were only able to produce four runs. The Tigers were limited to three hits and GHS errors accounted for two unearned runs.
A single and walk gave Adairsville base runners in the first, and a balk brought a run home.
Grizzle and Mel Mosley both singled in the second. Cochran’s liner to right evened the score. Grizzle got the fourth inning rolling with a single down the left field line. Mel Mosley’s home run to center spotted GHS a two-run lead.
A one-out, two-run Tiger double tied the score once again in the fifth. A two-run error with an out later moved AHS ahead, 5-3.
Rob Mosley’s single started the seventh for the Cats. He advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt and motored to third on a passed ball. Ocobock’s ground out to short brought him home for Gilmer’s last run.
Blake Grizzle finished with three hits on the day while Peyton Chancey, Rob Mosley and Mel Mosley notched two apiece. Shute and Cochran both had one.
