Three Gilmer High athletes have qualified for the Class 3A state track meet.
GHS was in Carnesville last Saturday for Class 3A’s ‘B’ sectional, which was comprised of teams from Regions 4, 6, 7 and 8. Athletes who placed in the top eight of their respective events will continue their seasons.
Punching their ticket to state are senior Bobcat pole vaulters Aspen Hataway and John Keener, while Lady Cat freshman Lilyan Cook will compete in the discus.
Both Hataway and Cook entered sectionals as Region 7 champions. Hataway placed fourth after clearing a height of 10’ 6”. Cook’s throw of 101’ allowed her to take eighth place. Keener also achieved a height of 10’ 6”, but the number of attempts needed settled him in seventh place.
Lady Cat Kenzie Sewell also competed at sectionals and finished ninth in the high jump (4’ 8”). Teammate Amayah Jones was 11th in the shot put with a mark of 32’ 5 1/2”.
Bobcat Douglas Callihan’s heave of 42’ 2” in the shot put was good enough for 10th. Fellow freshman Dawson Richard competed in the discus and finished 15th with a throw of 113’ 8”.
The Class 3A GHSA Track and Field State Championships will be held at Albany’s Hugh Mill’s Stadium Thursday through Saturday. Hataway and Keener will compete Thursday at 1 p.m., and Cook will begin the discus at 2 p.m.
