Inclement weather kept the Gilmer Bobcats off the court for most of the week.
GHS played its lone game last Wednesday at Calhoun, and a rough start plagued the Cats for the remainder of the game. The Yellow Jackets built a 14-point lead by halftime and went on to win, 64-50.
The quick and athletic Yellow Jackets crashed the boards for 17 offensive rebounds on the night. Overall, CHS outrebounded the Bobcats, 47-27.
“We were just flat offensively,” said head coach Jordan Hice. “We got some good shots but just couldn’t hit anything. We gave up a bunch of offensive rebounds, and they scored off every one in the first quarter (for 11 points). Of course we’re going to give up more offensive rebounds because we’re small. That was the big factor.
“We did fairly well defensively but were just flat in the first quarter scoring wise.”
On the night, Calhoun’s offensive rebounds led to 21 second-chance points compared to only two for Gilmer. When it came to ball security, Gilmer committed just six turnovers, its fewest of the season.
Half of Calhoun’s first quarter points came after offensive rebounds. Gilmer shot just 3/13 from the field through eight minutes to trail, 22-7.
While Gilmer managed to outscore the Jackets over the remainder of the game, it was not enough to recover from the 15-point deficit.
CHS led 34-20 at half time and 48-40 headed into the fourth quarter.
After shooting better than 41 percent from the field in the second and third quarters, the Cats made only 4/15 attempts in the fourth where CHS extended its lead.
Senior J.D. Taylor led the way for Gilmer with 24 points and eight rebounds. Keegen Bryant scored 14, Preston McVey was there for 10 and Boston Teague scored two. All three had four rebounds.
Trace Hawkins and Trey Perkins both scored 16 for CHS and Blake Hammett and Jaden Perkins were there for 10 apiece.
Gilmer is 7-7 overall and hosts Northwest Whitfield (11-3) today at 7:30 p.m.
