Gilmer High runners were on their home trail against local runners.
The annual North Georgia Championships 5K slipped in and out of the woods on Clear Creek Middle School’s campus last Tuesday.
The GHS Lady Cats finished second as a team while freshman Ella Schwartz won the girls race by over 36 seconds. Union County defeated GHS in the team standings, 32-55.
The Bobcats turned in a runner-up placement behind Union County as well. The Panthers’ tallied the lowest score possible to defeat the Bobcats, 15-51.
Schwartz and Union’s Lola Hunter (23:03.90) ran together over the first 3.2K of the race, but Schwartz pulled away over the final stretch for a first-place time of 22:27.40.
Jennifer Garcia was next in third place at 23:13.60, and she was tailed by teammates Allison Hernandez (8th, 25:44.60) and Melanie Toledo (19th, 29:58.40).
Rounding out the girls lineup were Alicia Tercero (27th, 37:48.70), Evelyn Martinez (31st, 38:21.20), Josselyn Cecilio (32nd, 38:27.90), and Jennifer Mateo (34th, 44:09.30).
Bobcat Dawson Richard led the way with a sixth-place finish in 19:59.50. Teammate Seth Turner followed closely in ninth at 20:17.10, with Leeland Dantin taking 11th in 20:42.90 and Jeremy Martinez placing 14th in 21:14.70.
Angel Garcia crossed in 22nd with 23:18.20, while Keby Puac finished 31st at 23:59.10.
Remaining Bobcats included Jacob Pantoja (40th, 26:11.90), Alex Alonzo (42nd, 26:24.20), Asa Leigh (47th, 29:56.30), Daniel Gonzales (50th, 32:38.30) and Edward Marietta (52nd, 38:04.50).
GHS attended the Wingfoot Invitational Saturday at Cartersville’s Sam Smith Park. The Lady Cats ran in the junior varsity division, while the Bobcats competed against teams in the JV-B category.
This time, Garcia (3rd, 21:44) was the first Lady Cat to finish, and she was followed by Schwartz (4th, 21:47), Jayla Walker (42nd, 25:05), Becerra (69th, 25:56) and Toledo (184th, 28:58).
For the Bobcats, Richard turned in a runner-up time of 19:05. Turner (6th, 19:50) and Dantin (9th, 20:16) cracked the top 10 as well. Also running for GHS were Eddie Alonzo (47th, 22:24), Alex Alonzo (62nd, 23:08), Leigh (122nd, 25:43) and Gonzales (161st, 29:18).
