The Gilmer Lady Cats continued their soccer season with two more matches.
Cherokee (6-1) was in Ellijay last Tuesday and the talented Warriors were continually on the attack. CHS took a healthy lead into the half and ended the game prematurely, 10-0. Gilmer hit the road Thursday to begin its region slate versus Heritage (3-4). Both teams had chances through 40 minutes. The Generals broke through for the match’s only goal in the opening minutes of the second half for a 1-0 win.
Cherokee’s speed and ball movement created plenty of open space to maneuver and score. CHS scored its first goal in just over two minutes and was ahead 2-0 four minutes later. The Warriors tacked on five more goals over a 19-minute span for a 7-0 halftime lead.
The second half was shortened by 20 minutes. CHS added three more goals, which brought an end to the match with 5:58 on the clock.
The Cats held a decisive shot advantage at Heritage. GHS unleashed 13 shots on the day and five of those were from inside the box, but all were saved.
The Generals won the possession battle but it only resulted in five shots. Heritage scored its goal less than three minutes into the second half. A General striker’s long run outpaced GHS defenders and she tapped the ball in from 8 yards out.
The Cats were unable to cash in their opportunities over the remainder of the game. The loss dropped the Cats’ record to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in region.
Gilmer hosts Calhoun (8-1) Friday at 5:30 p.m.
