Gilmer High was in Dalton for a track meet ahead of spring break.
The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats took on three teams at Coahulla Creek last Tuesday. The Bobcats secured second place in the boys standings behind the host Colts, 85-69.5. The Lady Cats (51 points) were third behind Coahulla Creek (82) and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe (61).
A top-five placement was needed in most events to accumulate team points, and GHS was first in three field events.
Lady Cat Lilyan Cook won the discus once again. Her throw measured 107’ 4”, and teammate Maddy Patterson was fourth at 70’ 8”.
Amayah Jones led the way in the shot put at 33’ 10’, and Lady Cats Taylor Schiesser (29’ 10”) and Cook (28’ 3”) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Kenzie Sewell secured second in the high jump (4’ 6”), and Maria Raymundo landed in fourth in the long jump (12’ 3”).
Only Bobcats competed in the pole vault, and John Keener, Aspen Hataway and Matthew Grice all tied for first by clearing the opening height of 7’.
In the discus, Avery Moseley placed second (115’ 8”) and Dawson Richard finished third (114’ 1”). GHS came away with second, third and fifth in the shot put with respective throws by Douglas Callihan (39’ 2”), Charles Norman (37”) and Logan Hightower (34’ 4”).
The Bobcats’ remaining points in field events were claimed by Dylan Pospisil in the triple jump (37’ 7”, second place) and Hataway in the long jump (16’ 7 3/4”, third).
In running events, Richard won the 1,600 meters in 5:26, and Maxwell New was third at 5:50. Bobcat Michael Little set the pace in the 800 at 2:16, and teammate Seth Turner (2:35) claimed fifth.
In the 3,200, Richard (11:54) and New (13:03) placed second and third, respectively. Little was also fourth in the 400 (56.85). Grice clocked in at 12.22 for fourth in the 100 meters, and Callihan (12.25) placed fifth.
The Bobcats ran in two relays. In the 4x400, James Beach, Leeland Dantin, Keener and Little were runners-up (3:49). The quartet of Little, Edward Marietta, New and Turner posted a time of 10:12 in the 4x800 for third place.
Lady Cat Aliza Chastain (1:09.82) was the No. 1 runner in the 400 meters, while Raymundo (1:18.4) placed fifth. Jayla Walker’s time of 16:10 in the 3,200 meters was good enough for second. She also placed fourth in the 1,600 at 7:28, and Stephanie Velasco was fifth in 7:40.
Madison Hall was fourth in the 800 (3:23) and Velasco was fifth (3:24). Raymundo took fourth in the 200 (35.07), and Chastain placed fifth in the 100 (14.75).
The Lady Cats were on the track for three relays. Chastain, Raymundo, Kayleigh Robbins and Addie Vick finished second in the 4x400 at 5:14. The 4x800 squad of Esther Bowman, Sophia Riblet, Velasco and Liz Gonzalez were third in 13:26.
The Cats also nabbed third in the 4x100 as the team of Chastain, Vick, Robbins and Kristen Wallace finished in 1:02.22.
