The 2021-2022 Gilmer High wrestling team has been unveiled.
The Purple vs. White Classic was held last Tuesday, and the annual intrasquad match also serves as alumni night. GHS coaches split the teams in effort to make the dual as close as possible, and their efforts paid off as White ended the night on top, 33-30.
“I was very happy with it,” said head coach Josh Ghobadpoor. “I was really proud of how the kids wrestled and conducted themselves. I thought the teams were very evenly matched. We put a lot of thought into making it fair. It usually comes down to the swing matches that are really hard to decide. Those are the matches that are really fun.”
Seven of the matches were decided by minor decision, and pins were secured by Carson Farist (113 pounds), Alex Raymundo (132), Carson Bentley (145), Frisly Ambrocio (152), Owen Moss (195), Dylan Galloway (215) and Tony Olea (285).
On the girls side, Letecia Tercero (122) and Hannah Mayo (152) were also victorious via pin.
“I was extremely proud of all of the wrestlers. I’m really thankful for our alumni coaches Mark Waddell and Doug Haynes,” Ghobadpoor said.
“I really want to brag on our student body and alumni. I turned around and the stands were pretty well packed. I thought that was really cool for our kids, for our student body to show up, have our youth wrestlers show up for a little while in between their practice time and have our alumni come out and support the program.”
