The Gilmer High Lady Cats squared off against one of the state’s best basketball teams to continue region play.
GHS was in Jasper last Friday, and No. 3 ranked Pickens earned its 19th win of the season. The Dragonettes continually took advantage of GHS turnovers and subpar shooting for a 54-20 rivalry win.
Gilmer made less than 20 percent of shots on the night while committing 21 turnovers. Those two factors were more than enough for Pickens, who is amidst one of its most successful seasons in school history.
While PHS was not a model of offensive efficiency, the Dragonettes did take 16 more shots than the Cats. Pickens’ 17 offensive rebounds led to 12 second-chance points. PHS made just 6/30 three-point attempts but took advantage of 24 points in the post.
In the opening quarter, GHS only attempted five shots and made one. Pickens scored 14 points and jumped to a 33-7 lead at the half.
Gilmer’s issues persisted over the final two quarters and Pickens’ lead widened. Sophia Riblet led GHS with six points and Chelsey Griggs had 10 rebounds.
Carolina Mullins and Isabella Hopkins both scored 16 points for PHS while Ellison Steinhauer added 11.
The loss dropped the Cats’ record to 7-10 overall, and they are 2-5 versus region opponents. GHS hosted No. 7 ranked Dawson County (11-8 record) at press deadline and will be in Lumpkin County (7-12) Friday for a 7 p.m. game.
