Gilmer High’s daunting region schedule continued with its latest home game.
The GHS Lady Cats hosted No. 2 Wesleyan last Tuesday in their return to the court after Christmas. While the Cats did show some promise in the first half, the Wolves’ talent and quickness were too much for GHS.
Gilmer had trouble getting shots to fall in the second half, and the Wolves’ offense kept humming in a 65-34 win.
Wesleyan shot 56 percent from the field while only 25 percent of the Cats’ shots found the bottom of the net. Four Wolves reached double figures in the game and five scored at least eight.
Aliza Chastain led the way offensively for GHS with nine points as both Lucy Ray and Madison Bradshaw added eight.
Both Bradshaw and Chastain made three pointers in the first as Wesleyan jumped to a quick 9-8 lead. The Wolves then went on an 11-2 run that crept into the second quarter.
Wesleyan continued to score in transition and from beyond the three-point arc as it led 38-22 at the half. The Wolves’ offense continued to produce points in the third while GHS made just three shots from the field.
Wesleyan’s 61-28 lead led to the fourth quarter being shortened to six minutes.
The Wolves were led by Audrey Ekoue-Bla’s 14 points while Chazadi Wright scored 12 points and had six assists.
The loss dropped the Cats’ record to 2-14. Gilmer will continue region play Friday when it hosts No. 8 ranked Pickens (13-4) at 7 p.m.
