Jackson McVey had a record-breaking year for the Gilmer Bobcats.
Throughout the course of the 2022-23 season, the sophomore all-region post player established four new standards for the program.
The first record to fall was the most field goals. When McVey scored 45 points against Sonoraville Dec. 20, he made 21. A little over a week later, Dec. 30, he set a new game mark for blocks with 11 against Savannah Christian.
By the time Gilmer was eliminated from the state tournament, McVey had racked up 80 total blocks, a seasonal record. His 376 rebounds on the year is also a program best.
“As a sophomore he had a really good year,” said head coach Jordan Hice. “Coming into a varsity season and being one of the main things people are looking for, I thought he handled that well. He did a really good job rebounding, and all those blocks helped a lot around the rim. He did a really good job, and hopefully he continues to improve over the next two years and increases those numbers.”
McVey’s field goal record supplanted the previous mark of 20 set by Ryan Lowery. Kell Weaver was the previous record holder for blocks in a game (nine), season (73) and seasonal rebounds (338).
McVey and dad Patrick are the only father-son duo in the GHS basketball record books. Patrick still holds the records for made free throws in a season (163) and career (330).
