GHS sophomore recognized in 3A
Gilmer High’s Jackson McVey has received an all-state basketball honorable mention from Sandysspiel.com.
The 7’ sophomore post player was one of 21 players in Class 3A to be recognized. McVey’s latest honor comes after he was voted to the All-Region 7-3A first team last month.
“He was a young player who came in and had a lot put on his shoulders,” said Gilmer head coach Jordan Hice. “He’s a dominant scorer and rebounder, and even in his off games, he’d score 12 or 14 points. He’s someone who works hard and puts a lot into his game and does a lot of traveling to get his name out there.
“A lot of teams know who he is and that they have to try and stop him. We were a strong offensive team, and other teams couldn’t focus on just one player.”
McVey was the Bobcats’ leading scorer (19.6 points per game), rebounder (12.4), shot blocker (2.7), and made 54.6 percent of attempts from the field.
Over the course of Gilmer’s 19-10 season, McVey supplanted four records. He is now the school leader in most field goals (21) and blocks (11) in a game. He is also the Bobcats’ seasonal leader in rebounds (376) and blocks (80).
McVey was one of three players to receive all-state recognition from Region 7-3A. White County’s Jadon Yeh was named to the all-state first team, while Wesleyan’s Josh Kavel received an honorable mention.
